The Power of a 20-Second Pause - Better Mental Health

Updated: Jun 13

Let’s be real—life gets busy. We all want to take care of our mental well-being, but finding time for long routines or big changes? Not easy.

I’ve felt that too. Hence, sharing this experience on how to improve mental health. Inspired by the book Atomic Habits by James Clear, we wanted to explore how small actions—even ones that take just a few seconds—can make a big difference in how we feel every day.

A Simple Start: The 20-Second Pause

One habit that has personally helped me a lot is something very simple: Pausing for just 20 seconds to take a few deep breaths.

Sounds too easy, right? But that tiny pause—whenever I remember to take it—helps me feel calmer, more grounded, and less overwhelmed.

Sometimes I do it in the middle of a hectic workday. Other times, it’s when I’m stuck in traffic or feeling mentally tired.

Instead of powering through, I stop. Close my eyes. Breathe in deeply. Breathe out slowly.

And just like that, I feel a small shift. A sense of calm. A mental reset. My mental health gets better.

Why This Works

In our fast-paced world, our minds are constantly running. We’re switching between tasks, juggling responsibilities, and often forgetting to just breathe.

This small pause helps interrupt that loop. It’s like hitting a soft “refresh” button in your brain. It clears out mental clutter, reduces stress, and helps you feel more present—even if just for a moment.

Science supports this too. Deep breathing can lower blood pressure, slow down the heart rate, and help the body relax.

It Only Takes Seconds

Let’s be honest—we don’t always have time for a full meditation session. But 20 seconds? That’s something we can all manage.

You can do it:

  • Before an important meeting

  • While waiting for your coffee to brew

  • After a tough conversation

  • Or even while scrolling—just stop and take 3 slow breaths

It’s not about doing it perfectly—just consistently. That’s where the magic builds.

Why It Matters - Better Mental Health...

The more I practice this, the more I realise that these small pauses add up. It’s like giving your mind a short break—just enough to catch up with your breath, your body, and your thoughts.

Over time, it creates more space in your day. More awareness. More calm.

And maybe, just maybe, it helps us avoid getting to a point where we feel completely burned out and start looking for big solutions like a “mental detox.”

Instead, we care for our minds every day—in small, conscious ways.

Final Thoughts

This is my invitation to you: Don’t wait for a breakdown to pause. Start now. Take 20 seconds. Just breathe.

Let’s remind ourselves—it’s okay to slow down. Our health, our balance, and our peace are worth that tiny moment.

We don’t need big changes. We just need mindful ones.

Because micro habits do lead to macro impact.

Let’s build this together, one breath at a time.
